In the whole world, companies formed and run by members of the same family dominate the economy. According to a Family Business Research, conducted by PwC, a global enterprise which provides specialized services in the areas of auditing and consulting, shows Brazil as a country of performance, surpassing the world average and with projection of a promising future for it’s enterprises. This is no different for large farms and coffee farms, for example, where the rural scene is composed of wives, children, nephews and grandchildren of former coffee growers, names that perpetuate and mark the epoch as that of Francisco Firmo de Mattos, known among the “Coffee Barons” of the 19th and 20th centuries.

After he passed away in the 50’s, the process of structured succession began by the children and by members of the third generation who intended to honor the legacy and run the business with the same claw of the patriarch, to expand the segment. In Patrocínio, in the Alto Paranaíba region of Minas Gerais, are concentrated the Mattos’ family lands, among them, the CentralMattos / Santa Rita and Colorado, properties of Filomena Estefânia, the youngest of the 14 heirs of Mr. Mattos. In 317 hectares of coffee plantations the Mattos Couto’s family focused their efforts on the coffee production. Over time, the positive responses and level of quality of each grain were consolidated, leading the coffee growers to grow a special product, pure in its originality and sensorial characteristics. A new brand has been launched under the name of Café Filomena Estefânia, inspired by the name of the matriarch. The “right-hand” of Mrs. Filomena Estefânia, her daughter Maria Thereza Mattos Couto, has the mission of increasing the market share, both nationally and internationally, reaching people that value and appreciate the special and unique coffee grains grown by the family.
