A bit of our history

Fazenda do Riacho

The antique farm named Fazenda do Riacho, imposing by it’s design and the original layout, dating back to Brazil’s empire, no longer has the address of Mr. Francisco Firmo de Mattos, a name that in the 19th century was behind one of the largest cattle production and coffee plantations in the Region of Contagem, Minas Gerais.

Owner of an immeasurable trajectory and head of the third generation of a coffee grower’s family, the patriarch of the family Mattos began his history in a seminar in Mariana (MG), where he changed the priesthood, for the family constitution, which gave him 14 children. Eight of the first marriage with Mrs. Maria Margarida Brochado de Mattos, and later widower, he married again, with Mrs. Isabel Nascimento de Mattos, with whom he had six more children .

In 1956, with the death of Mr. Francisco at the age of 88, the routine of the Mattos changed, leaving as a legacy a vast memorial of experiences and passion for a high-quality coffee culture, recognized by the exceptional aroma and flavor. In the meantime, the small town of Contagem was striding ahead, bringing a huge urban expansion and leading the heirs to divide the farm into development areas of industries and housing.

Attentive to the transformation of the new scenario, one of the children, already installed in Patrocínio (MG) and working in the same coffee segment, attracted the brothers to purchase land in the Cerrado Mineiro Region, to the northwest of the state, recognized as the first Denomination of Origin of the country in the production of specialty coffees. Them the Fazenda Novo Riacho was born, the first of a series specialized in growing white crops, and in 1980 it was leveraged to plant the special coffee grains.

With the growth of children, nephews and grandchildren, the loss of some and the dissolution of society among others, the lands were divided and renamed, highlighting the Farm Novo Riacho owned by the brothers and the Farm Central Mattos, owned by the sisters. In 2007 there was a new division of properties. Each heir became the owner of a farm, the Central Mattos / Santa Rita was transferred to Filomena Estefânia. In 2017, she also acquired the Colorado Farm.

The Mattos Couto’s saga in the coffee plantations of the Cerrado Mineiro head up by matriarch Filomena Estefânia, the youngest of the heirs of Mr. Francisco, name that today gives rise to the brand ” Café Filomena Estefânia”. From the farm Central Mattos to the shelves of the national and international markets, the product arrives with certificate of UTZ and Rainforest Alliance, as Seal of Denomination of Origin that attests to the provenance and sensory qualities, evaluated according to the methodology and protocols of the American Association of Special Coffees SCAA.
